Ópera Garnier
Masterpiece of 19th century theatrical architecture
Ópera Garnier
The Garnier Opera de París is a cultural venue located in one of the most outstanding buildings in the French capital, neo-baroque in style and inaugurated in 1875.
This masterpiece of 19th century theater architecture is one of the most important monuments in Paris.
Opera Garnier in history
Avenue de l’Opéra , to be built from here to his residence, the Tuileries Palace. For this to be possible, an entire neighborhood had to be expropriated and demolished.
The performance hall’s famous ceiling, designed by Chargall, is one of its best features, with its horseshoe shape and massive crystal chandelier.
The Opera Garnier is the place where the events related in “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux take place.
Today it is mainly used for ballet and opera performances.
What to see in Opera Garnier
The Garnier Palace , as the building is also known, has a resplendent decoration, both inside and outside, and its impressive green and red marble staircase is, along with the ceiling, one of its most attractive details.
The luxury and opulence of the decoration based on gold leaf and mosaics extend to the lobbies, where the spectators, important figures of Parisian life, strolled during the breaks.
Its 1,900 seats are covered in red velvet and the huge stage curtain is also impressive.
In the Opera Garnier there is also the Library-Museum of the Opera where three centuries of history of this art form are compiled , with costumes, sets, scores and drawings that recount the musical life of Paris.
