The Moulin Rouge in history
Its beginning took place at a time when people needed a spirit of freedom and a lot of fun ; Located in Montmartre, a neighborhood where disreputable characters met, it soon attracted people from the aristocracy with its party atmosphere and debauchery and its beautiful women .
It was immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec in his work “At the Moulin-Rouge, the ball” painted in the year 1890.
During the Second World War and the German occupation the city lost its joie de vivre, but in 1951 Georges France bought the cabaret and renovated it, ready to restore it to its former splendor; in 1955 the dinner-shows at the Moulin Rouge began with resounding success.
In 1962 a giant aquarium was installed where naked dancers swam before the astonished eyes of the spectators, and at first out of superstition, and later out of tradition, the shows bore names beginning with “F”: Frou Frou, Frisson, Fascination, Fantastic, Frenesie, etc.
Celebrities who have performed at this famous venue include Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, Ginger Rogers, Lisa Minnelli and Frank Sinatra.
The place
The Moulin Rouge enclosure has a capacity for 850 people. All spread out in a room with a cozy vintage guinguette style (typical cabaret in a Parisian suburb) where hundreds of small incandescent red table lamps resemble a constellation.
