Parque Des Buttes-Chaumont
Charming gardens with a view in Paris
Des Buttes-Chaumont Park
The Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, With 25 hectares, is one of the largest gardens in Paris, along with the Parc de la Villette and the Tuileries Gardens.
It was created in 1867, and its inauguration was at the same time as the Universal Exposition.
Its curves and slopes are wonderful ways to go for those who like to walk. Surprising its inclination and unevenness. This irregularity of the surface is due to the fact that it was built on an old quarry for the extraction of gypsum and Moleña stones, which was used to manufacture buildings.
What to see in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont
Between its undulations and its constant ups and downs, we can access points that allow a beautiful view of Paris , especially Montmartre.
Some other waterfall appears there, a cave , and we also find a suspension bridge that leads us to a cliff 30 meters high .
Around, trees embellish the landscape while birds (robins, chickadees, nuthatches, ravens…) sing and play on the lake artificial , where on its size of 1.5 hectares ducks and geese swim . On it, in the center, lives a rocky island . In it we find a temple of the Sibyl , built in 1869.
An important variety of plants can be observed, with a great diversity of species , some impressive both for their age (there is an oriental plane tree planted in 1862 and a Lebanon cedar from 1880 ) and for their beauty (for example, a sophora that extends its branches to the lake).
And to lie down to rest and relax, we find 12 hectares of grass that with its pleasant green invites us to rest on it.
For those who visit Paris with the family, the park offers different animations, including two theaters: Le Guignol in Paris and Théâtre Guignol Anatole
