Saint Denis Basilica
Burial place of the kings of France
Basilica of Saint-Denis
The Basilica of Saint Denis is the burial place of the French monarchy. It is located about 40 minutes from the center of Paris.
It is the first Gothic temple built in Paris.
The building rises around the burial place of the first bishop of Paris and patron saint of the city, Saint Denis, and opened its doors in the 13th century.
It has the status of a cathedral, is an abbey and also holds the title of minor basilica.
The tomb of Marie Antoinette
Its enormous stained glass windows give it a luminous appearance and in its main nave, the choir and the crypt, you can admire the tombs of the royal rulers of France, princes and princesses and important servants of the kingdom, including Philip IV the Fair, Elizabeth of Bavaria and Marie Antoinette.
During the French Revolution the tombs were desecrated and the royal remains were transferred to a common grave, where they remained until 1817, when those that could be correctly identified were returned to their original resting place, while the rest remain stored in the crypt of the church.
During the spring, several classical music concerts are held to coincide with the feast of Saint Denis.
